The research shows that married and cohabiting couples are at higher risk of HIV infection than those never married. They account for an estimated 65% of new HIV infections. Where as 6.3% of men and women (15-49) currently in union are HIV positive, compared to 1.6% of those never in union only 5% of cohabiting couples are discordant, while 3% are HIV positive concordant Today multiple sexual partnerships are common, while condom use among married couples is low and yet only 3.3% of married women and 4.3% of married men have tested for HIV and received results in the last 12 months (2004-2005 UHSBS), this shows that around 90% of married men and women do not know the HIV status of any of their partners.
