UHCA in partnership with Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), organised a media excursion aimed at enabling media activists and journalists to appraise the situation on the ground. This involved engaging local government leaders to explain some of the information obtained from communities as well as enablers or inhibitions shaping the situation on ground.
The excursions was designed to enable the media gather relevant issues and experiences affecting people grassroots to be captured in the media. It was also expected to enable journalists to direct informed media enquires to policy makers on issues related to paediatric HIV/AIDS.
The excursions which was preceded by a briefings on the core areas of focus for Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric
Foundation (EGPAF). The briefings aimed at equipping the media activists and journalists to acquire up-to-date information on the current trends and emerging issues so as to report more accurately.
UHCA selected a number of journalists both form mainstream print and broadcast media houses in Kampala and South Western Uganda that was guided by the considerations of the individual’s involvement in health reporting, the relevant media house and previous work with UHCA.
The two days excursion saw the team visiting Rugazi Centre IV Hospital in Rubirizi District and Kamwezi Health Centre in Kabale District. The exercise was principally aimed at focussing on the issues that the organisation is working on and to highlight the achievements and gaps within the editorial policy and practice of each media house. And mention that it was successful, a series of health stories from the excursion has been aired on TVs, Radios and published in major Newspapers.
